SUMMARY:Need of Localization of Battery BMS in India & Data Security
DESCRIPTION:LC-image\nNeed of Localization of Battery BMS in India & Data Security\nThe NetZero Energy Transition Association (NETRA) convened a high-impact round table on “Localization of Battery Management Systems (BMS) in India & Data Security\,” bringing together 50+ key stakeholders from the energy storage\, EV\, and clean technology ecosystem. The discussion centered on strengthening Local Content Requirement (LCR) frameworks in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects while addressing critical concerns around cybersecurity and supply chain resilience. \nIndia’s BMS segment currently faces a high import dependency of 70-80%\, highlighting a major gap in domestic manufacturing capabilities. However\, with the market projected to grow from $180-220 million to $1.2-1.6 billion over the next decade\, there is a significant opportunity to boost local manufacturing\, innovation\, and value chain development under India’s clean energy transition goals. \nA key takeaway from the session was the distinction between localization and cybersecurity. Industry experts emphasized that while localization of BMS components is essential for long-term energy security and reducing import reliance\, cybersecurity must be addressed as an immediate and independent priority. Recent incidents involving remotely disabled electric vehicles have reinforced the urgent need for robust data protection\, secure communication protocols\, and standardized cybersecurity frameworks. \nParticipants highlighted that full localization may take time due to global semiconductor supply chain constraints. Therefore\, a phased approach focusing on high-priority components\, policy support\, and industry standards is crucial. \nOverall\, strengthening LCR in BESS projects\, alongside advancing BMS cybersecurity and domestic manufacturing\, will play a vital role in building a secure\, scalable\, and self-reliant energy storage ecosystem in India.
